The foundation was even more substantial. A 15" wide by 4' long 1/2" steel plate was laid onto the soil at the base of the pier. A 10" steel pipe with a 3/8" wall thickness was erected onto the plate. The plate was needed to keep the pier pipe from sinking into the soft, New Orelans soil. 1/2" reinforcing steel was passed through the pier and tied into the reinforcing for the concrete base. The base was 5'X5'X2'. After concrete was poured to form the base, the lower 5" of the pier was also filled with concrete.
